History

The journal was founded in the winter of A.S. 1347/A.D.  1969, by the late Dr. Maḥmūd Rāmyār. The first issue was published in celebration of the “Centennial Memorial of Ḥakīm Sabzivārī”, and went by the title: “Nashrīyi-yi Dānishkadi-yi ʿUlūm-i Maʿqūl and Manqūl-i Mashhad”. From the outset, the journal was enthusiastically welcomed by the scholars and intellectuals. The second issue of the journal was published after a three-year interandl in the spring of A.S. 1351/ A.D. 1972, this time titled as “Nashrīyi-yi Dānishkadi-yi Ilāhīyāt and Maʿārif-i Islāmī”. The journal was thereafter published regularly as a quarterly until the Spring of A.S. 1358/A.D. 1979, reaching its 28th issue. Dr. Muḥammad Vāʿiẓ Zādih was the Editor-in-Chief of the journal from its earliest days until A.S. 1353/A.D. 1974. Following him, the late Dr. Ghulamriżā Nāfilī assumed the role. in the September of A.S. 1352/A.D. 1973 and was replaced by Dr. ʿAlī Akbar Shahābī. Thereafter the journal underwent some modifications in terms of IfA, so that the articles related to each field were published conjointly and in their specific section. At this point, a section titled “Shi’ite Studies” was added to the journal. Shahābī encouraged scholars to undertake studies in this field, he himself publishing articles on the topic as well.

Following the Islamic Revolution in A.S. 1358/ A.D. 1979 and after the transformation of political systems in Iran, the journal’s publication came to a halt. A halt continuing for the next 15 years, until the year A.S. 1373/A.D. 1995. In A.S. 1372/A.D. 1993, the late Dr. Sayyid Mahdī Șāni’ī (then Dean of faculty) made a successful attempt to resume the journal’s publication, resulting in the announcement of the 29th issue in A.S. 1373/A.D. 1993, directed by Dr. Ghulamriżā Nāfilī. Dr. Maḥmūd Yazdī Muṭlaq, known as “Fāżil” was then appointed as the chief director in-charge of the journal. In A.S. 1376/A.D. 1997, the “Committee for the Eandluation of Academic Journals” (affiliated with the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology) awarded the journal with a scientific-research ranking.

In an effort to make the journal an expert venue in recent years, it was authorized (by the chief director of research at MSRT, according to letter no. 3/4442, dated A.S. 1387.06.06/ A. D. 2008.08.27) to take on four special scopes, with two issues published each year in each field of expertise. Consequently, four special titles are being published since 1387/07/01.

  1. Journal of  Fiqh and uṣūl
  2. Journal of ʿUlūm-i Qurʾān and Ḥadīth
  3. Journal of Falsafih and Kalām
  4. Journal of Tārīkh and Farhang
