Since long time ago, Muslims linguistics and particularly the reciters of the Qur'an who have written about and been expert at the science of orthoepy and Qur'anic recitation (tajwīd), have opened up a discussion about iṭbāq and muṭbaqa letters and studied these letters in view of their articulation and attributes. The present writing tries to address the viewpoints of the Muslim linguistics from the perspective of modern phonology and phonemics and set forth a scientific, fundamental, and modern description of iṭbāq (velarization) and muṭbaqa letters (velarized consonants).
Keywords: iṭbāq, muṭbaqa letters, phonemics, phonology, velarization.
