Performing petition prayer, as one of the prevalent rituals in the Islamic culture, has been commonly performed and received attention since long time ago. Various manners and different practices have been noted in different traditions for its performance. Although some of these manners and practices have only been related in quite recent texts, their promotion has been mainly attributed to the religious dignitaries such as the Prophet (S.A.W.) and the Imams (A.S.). Identifying these various types and attempting to classify them, this article seeks to find a way to the historiography of petition prayer rituals and their traditions.
Keywords: the Shī‘a history of liturgical literature, rituals of the Islamic world, Shī‘ī rituals, historiography of traditions, Muslims’ devotional rites and customs.
